What is the difference between Suit and Tuxedo?

We, at Bentex Suits often have grooms come to us who have no clue what the difference between suit and Tuxedo. Well, the main point of difference is the use of satin Tuxedos. Tuxedos have Satin facing on the lapels, satin covered buttons, satin pocket trim on pockets and a satin tape running down the side seam of your pants. Traditional tuxedo pants do not have belt loops on them, as you are not meant to be wearing belt with Tuxedo pants. Tuxedos have been made famous by James bond movies, that’s is why we also refer to Tuxedo or Dinner jacket as Bonds Jacket.

Suits typically will have collars made in same fabric as rest of the jacket with plastic buttons or you could even request buttons covered in self-fabric if you are getting your suits made. Suit pants have belt loops and can have cuffs.
The other point of difference would be the accessories that are worn with Tuxedos. Tux or Dinner jacket is usually worn with Dress Shirt, vest, Cummerbund and Bow Tie.
 ·       Dress Shirt – Dress shirt is not your usual business shirt. It’s a formal shirt with pin tucking detail at the front and comes with Wing collar or a 2inch classic collar and French cuff. Many people prefer to have contrast buttons on the placket – for example if you are wearing a black tux with white shirt you could have contrast buttons on the placket which will match back to your dinner jacket.
·       Vest – Dinner suits/Tuxedos are also worn together with vest to complete the look. The front of the vest is made in same fabric as suit and the back is made in satin fabric. To add more glamour to your Tuxedo you can also opt for contrast vest or a double-breasted vest.
·       Cummerbund – is a sash made in satin fabric same fabric as collar lapel and buttons and is worn around the waist.
·       Bow Tie – Bow Tie is also made in the same satin fabric as cummerbund and collar lapel. There are clip on bow ties or the traditional tie it your-self bow tie.
·       Shoes – Tuxedos must be worn with Shiny patent leather shoes only and preferably with laces.
Suits are usually worn with Basic men’s dress shirt, vest and a Necktie.
Most common colors for Tuxedos/Dinner Jackets are Black, Grey and White. If you want to be a hint different try a navy blue Tuxedo - like the one in the latest 007 movie or the once from the latest SAG awards red carpet!
